Family Camp-Out Training Retreat

CWCT Mission: to enlighten the general public through living historians, by demonstrating everyday life and work during the Civil War years. The CWCT uses re-enactment, educational demonstrations, and hands on activities to foster an apparition for this time in our nation’s history.

Developing or Honing your First Person Impression -
19th century family roles - 19th century customs and etiquette
Learn how to portray a character from the 1860’s during this seminar. Civil War era lifestyles, character possibilities, slang/idioms/speaking/knowing the history of those time/mannerisms will be included in the lessons. Study manual included.

Blacksmithing - Introduction to Blacksmithing
The class will be a “hands on lesson” taking a raw section of metal to a finished product. Material / instruction cost will be $10 per student; you will be making useful items such as a ridge pole hanger you can use to hang a lantern or a grip hook to hang cloths or maybe make a chow bell. Students are encouraged but not required to bring a hammer (2 - 2 ½ pound mini sledge, cross-pain, straight-pain or ball pain are good), safety glasses and vice grips. Leather gloves ARE required. Everyone takes their project home.

(There will be one two hour class per day with free time after lunch to allow students to finish up their projects.)

Proper Attire and Accessories -
Learn what to where and when, the little extras that our female ancestors had available to them. Learn proper fabrics of the period, authentic presentations, etc. study manual included.

Campfire Cooking -
The class will give students a “hands-on” lesson in campfire
building (best way to construct your fire pit with what woods to use) and Dutch oven cooking. Recipe manual will be included.

Bread Baking -
The class will give students a “hands-on” lesson on baking bread the old fashion way. Recipe manual will be included

Gunsmith & Gun Maintenance -
On firearms of the Period will be offered twice daily by Bobby Wyatt. There is no cost for class but a charge will me made for any gunsmith work done by Bobby Wyatt during the class. Bring your firearms and learn the proper way to maintain your equipment.

Location: CWCT Office porch
Time: 9:00 a.m. & 1:00 p.m. Bobby will be available for repairs
All during the day.

Toys and Games of the Period -
We will teach young students how their ancestors amuse themselves during the 1860's by showing creating and playing with an array of replica toys and games.

Location: On the green behind the church
Time: Morning and Afternoon starting @ 9:00 a.m.
Plantation doll making will be done in the afternoon by Kathy Osborn

Vintage Baseball -
Will be offered by Boy Scout Troop 1880. We are pleased to have the adventure Troop affiliated with the CWCT.

Bonnet Making -
Class will be offer on both Saturday and Sunday afternoon. The class will be an hour of instructions followed with availability of assistance through the rest of the day. (Two bonnets will be offered) (Limited amounts of bonnet making kits for sale)

Supplies needed: bonnet #1 (same bonnet from last year)
2ft X 2ft piece Heavy Buckram,
40” 19 gage cotton wrapped wire, 3 yards of 45” width material. ( for front & back of hat w/Bias strip edging)
6” X 45” ) Lace (for bottom edge of back of hat),
2yds 2” wide lace, (for back edge of hat),
1- 3 tooth small hair comb (to hold hat on to head)
2- 3” X 30” ribbon (for ties).

Supplies needed: bonnet #2
1yd 45” wide of material of your choice for bonnet
¾ yd 45” wide contrasting material for piping and lining
1 yd 45” wide 2nd contrast material for binding and piping
1 yd sew-in interfacing
31” X 3/8 yd Buckram

Corset making of 1860’s -
Class will be offered on Saturday morning with
instructions of the garment pattern fitting and cutting out the balance of Saturday and Sunday will be assistance on making your garment. A sewing machine will be needed.

Location: Sidney Cattle Co.
Time: 10:00 a.m.

Supplies needed: 1 – 1 ½ yards bleached white medium weight cotton in a satin weave which might have been glazed. ¼” or 3/8” wide steel stays: If back length is 15 ½ to 16” purchase 2–11”, 3–13”, and 2–14”.
If back length is 12” to 17 ½” purchase 2-12”, 2-14”, and 2-15”
Notions: one five yard length of shoe lace. One 12” long center front clasp, Thirty ¼” or #2 split brass or copper eyelets. One eyelet setter and one fabric punch. If embroidering top edge: a small embroidery hoop, 40/2 wet spun white linen thread and 3 Yrd. ½” white twill tape. If not embroidering top edge: 6 yds. Of 12” white twill tape. I (Optional: a bone stiletto, here # 3 brass hooks and loop eyes.)

Learn to Knit you own Bosom Buddy -
Spend a day and learn to knit a warm and cozy Sontag or Bosom Buddy in a pattern taken directly from Godeys 1861 Ladies Book. We will fit the pattern specifically to your frame and include a handmade antler button to finish off your project. Keep in mind that all yarns and needles must be period appropriate – no synthetic yarns or colored metal or plastic needles. If you prefer to get your yarns and needles at the event, Heritage Arts will have a selection for you to choose from. Basic knowledge of knit stitch helpful.

Supplies needed: 6 - 8 oz. sport weight natural fiber yarn in main color.
2 – 4 oz. sport weight natural fiber yarn in coordinating color
Wooden or silver metal knitting needles in size appropriate to your yarn size.

Dance Class -
Learn the names and steps of the most popular 1860’s Dances, such as the Grand March, Virginia reel, and etc. Min. class size is 12 – Maximum class size 48.

Location: Next to the Church at the camp fire
Time: 6:00 p.m.
Period street dance will be offered after the class.

In the evening gather around the camp fire to visit with old friends and make new friends.

Bring your sheet music and instruments and let’s have some fun with singing the music of the 1860’s
